What is RTI (Real time information)?

Every time a company pays an employee, they are required by the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) payroll system to report the employee’s pay and other deductions to His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This reporting procedure is known as Real-Time Information or RTI.

Employers are required to submit two types of RTI. Full Payment Submission (FPS) and Employer Payment Summary (EPS).

When an employer pays an employee, they primarily submit RTI data to HMRC using the FPS format. Included in this submittal should be the employee’s pay and all associated deductions. No matter how much an employee makes or how long they’ve been employed, employers must submit a full payment.

A typical FPS should include information about your employee, such as:

  • What percentage of income tax and NICs should be subtracted?
  • Their name, address, UK tax identification number, and NIN.
  • Information on their take-home pay.
  • Whether they are new hires or departing employees.

In order to notify HMRC of any deductions to be made based on the calculations from the FPS, an EPS is a component of RTI that is sent to them.

What is the deadline for monthly RTI (Real-time information) Submission to HMRC?

Most employers are required to electronically report PAYE information to HMRC under RTI on or before the employees’ payday.

Are there any penalties or fines for non or late RTI submissions?

HMRC will fine you if the FPS is not submitted on time. Depending on the number of employees you have, HMRC may impose a fine. Businesses with fewer than nine employees must pay £100.

Are there any exemptions from RTI?

Exemptions may be available if you have a carer or support person working in your home or for you or if someone has a disability to use an online channel.
