Freelancing ain’t easy – how to prove freelancing is a real job

With the job market becoming more and more competitive, more and more people are turning to freelancing as a way to make a career.

Yet, even though it’s becoming such a popular career choice, there are still many people who think it’s actually quite easy.

While they’re slaving away in an office, they like to think of freelancers as people who don’t even climb out of bed until after midday, and then maybe do a couple of hours of work before calling it a day.

Well, here is a list of the things a freelancer actually has to spend their time doing, and why freelancing isn’t actually as easy as many think.

Feast or famine

Those who aren’t self-employed are used to getting their salary paid into their account each month, no matter how well they actually perform.

It’s not so easy for freelancers. One month they could have too much work to handle, and the next they have absolutely nothing to do.

Managing their money is like a completely separate job, one that can be more stressful than their actual freelance projects.

Paid holidays? What’s that?

It’s nice being able to go on holiday, or get sick, and still get paid, isn’t it?

Well, freelancers are unfamiliar with that concept. They only get paid when they work, so if they’re not working, they’re not earning any money.

That means when freelancers do manage to book a holiday, they’re often dragging work along with them so the holiday doesn’t bankrupt them.

A freelancer isn’t really their own boss

One of the biggest reasons cited for becoming a freelancer is that you get to be your own boss.

Well, it is technically true, but a freelancer still has to answer to their clients.

Since freelancers are often working simultaneously on multiple projects for multiple clients, they essentially have multiple bosses to keep happy.

Freelancers don’t get all the fun and easy work

Many people get the impression that the majority of freelancers can afford to turn down work that they’ll find boring, and so end up only doing the fun, easy work.

Not only can most freelancers not afford to turn down lots of boring work, clients don’t often pay freelancers to do the fun and easy work – they just do it themselves.

Clients pay freelancers to do the more difficult work because they don’t want do it or because they don’t know how to.

Freelancers have to do everything

If you’re not self-employed, you probably work alongside other employees who all have different roles, such as accounting, sales, marketing, HR, etc. You’re free to just do what you’re good at.

A freelancer doesn’t have this luxury. A freelancer has to do everything.

Even if you don’t have any work on a particular day, there are still plenty of things you could be doing, such as updating your portfolio, sorting out your accounting and other administrative tasks, or updating your blog, etc.

As a freelancer, even when you have no work, the work never ends.

A freelancer has to constantly sell themselves

At the beginning of your freelance career, you might think that when you receive a call from a potential client you’ve already won them over.

But really it’s only just begun.

You still need to convince them that your service is better and more useful than other freelancers working in the same field.

You also need to convince them you’re worth the rates you’re asking them to pay.
